About Cloud Computing

Jenny Xu on February 23, 2011

It is easy to see the Cloud Computing has gained lots of talks in year 2010.  However there is still some confusion about the concept and the scope.  I wish there were a better name than "Cloud Computing".  From what I see, almost everything in IT infrastructure is related to cloud computing:

  • Hardware and software design and configuration;
  • Network, storage, hardware, software and service virtualization;
  • Server consolidation and optimization;
  • Configuration and service automation;
  • Service management;
  • SaaS, LaaS, PaaS;
  • ......

However Cloud Computing is an evolution in IT technologies, not a revolution.  Having said that, the benefits from Cloud Computing are real though.  They can come from the following aspects depending on what you have done or used  in Cloud Computing:

  • Improved Productivity from Service Automation, especially Deployment Automation;
  • Improved Hardware and Software Usage and Capacity Planning Overall;
  • Reduced Risks because of Enhanced Server, Application and Service Mobility;
  • Reduced Risks because of Enhanced Server and Application Monitoring.

Because of the real benefits and the obvious importance in IT infrastructure optimization, which includes the asset optimization, service communication optimization, and management optimization, I would strongly recommend CIOs and CTOs and other IT managers to take actions on this Cloud Computing times:

  • What can be achieved? - Business, Financial and Technology Goals?;
  • How to achieve them?  Buy or Built? Private or Public or Hybrid Clouds?
  • How to manage your new IT territory?  How to integrate your Cloud world with non-Cloud world?  ......

Since the concept and scope of the "Cloud" are vague, please be careful for what you get by doing or obtaining what - it is not as obvious as you thought.  Please feel free to Contact Us if you need any help.

Cheers!
