How to Handle Disagreements

Jenny Xu on March 2, 2010

Recently, I have been asked about how to handle disagreements by some organizations. I would say some common foundation work needed as well beyond the tactics and efforts to handle the difference in each specific case. In my opinion, the foundation work will include: proper corporate governance (policies, published and communicated standards, communication channels) ; proper IT governance (policies, published and communicated standards, communication channels); Healthy corporate culture - open, positive, creative and encouraging creativity, allowing differences but also resolving differences, sharing consistent and persistent goals, work-life balanced, ... Humane managers and humane employees.

Beyond these foundation work, the personal and project based efforts like well-preparing meetings, sharing knowledge base, social and compromising in certain degree will take place and can help bringing concerns in most of situations. In some situations, the concerns just exist no matter what you do. In those situations, either time is the key or those differences are allowed in reality. And remember it is the difference in people's mind actually bringing this world forward. If everybody thinks exactly same, we may not have the most of stuff that we enjoy today.

Cheers!
